Fangfoss and the vicinity
Fangfoss is in the East Riding of Yorkshire, at a point where the Yorkshire Wolds rise up from the Vale of York. The village has a traditional pub, the Carpenter’s Arms, serving good meals and real ale, and boasts a nine-acre park with paths, woodland and children’s play areas. There are several interesting craft enterprises a short walk from the cottage, including Fangfoss Pottery, the Rocking-horse Shop with its fascinating museum, and Harry Postill, the furniture maker. Just up the lane from Foldyard Cottage is St. Martin’s Church, where three services per month are held.
Several pleasant walking and cycle routes along quiet roads and tracks start from the village. For instance, an excellent walk is to the picturesque village of Bishop Wilton, two and a half miles away, where there is a village shop and good pub, and from where further walks lead up on to the Wolds.
The charming market town of Pocklington, with its friendly shops and pleasant streets, is just four miles to the east. At Burnby Hall, a short stroll from the centre of the town, a beautifully-kept park houses the national water-lily collection. The town boasts its own arts centre, with films, plays, musical events and exhibitions to suit all tastes.
Four miles to the west is Stamford Bridge, where the victory of King Harold in 1066 over invaders from Scandinavia was the precursor to his defeat by William the Conqueror just a few weeks later. There is a small supermarket, bakery, newsagent, and other shops here.
